Electric Vehicle Battery: Charging Station or Battery Replacement

2020-05-15

In the current situation where environmental pollution continues to be difficult to solve and oil and gas prices fluctuate dramatically, energy electrification is really the trend with no other choice. In this context, the concept of electric vehicles has been hotly debated worldwide for many years. The Tesla Model S electric car, which was launched last year, has become extremely popular due to its handsome and cool appearance, reliable price, and performance that is not inferior to gasoline power. Domestic related industries are also accelerating their layout.

For electric vehicles, the issue of charging efficiency is not difficult to solve, but how to charge it is a troublesome matter. It is not practical to use the car owner's household power source to charge cars hundreds of meters away, and setting up charging facilities in the parking lot also requires large-scale infrastructure renovation. The solution for the government and manufacturers is to build charging stations that cover both urban and rural areas. Tesla is collaborating with domestic banks such as Minsheng Bank, Intime, and China Unicom to build charging stations around their various branches.

But can charging stations really solve the problem of electric vehicle range? Not to mention how to build sufficient charging facilities on a land area of 9.6 million square kilometers, especially in the sparsely populated central and western regions; Only in over 650 cities of different sizes, building enough self charging equipment requires completing a massive power grid renovation project and occupying a large amount of land, which is clearly a serious waste in urban areas with scarce land resources; After the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, even a 5-minute charging time will still cause congestion on nearby roads in densely populated first tier cities, and more intensive facility construction is clearly impossible. This series of problems, coupled with the difficulty of charging electric vehicles after their widespread adoption, may seriously limit the development of the industry.

It's better to be proactive than to make up for the lost sheep. Solving the charging problem may require a different approach: replacing the battery of electric vehicles seems to be a better choice than charging around a charging station. Establishing battery rental stores based on population and user density, where the stores prepare pre charged battery modules for users to replace and use, can indeed avoid a lot of trouble. According to Tesla's introduction, the entire process of replacing the battery pack for the Model S electric vehicle only takes 90 seconds, greatly reducing user time, improving efficiency, and reducing possible congestion; Secondly, compared to charging stations, the number of battery rental outlets can be greatly reduced, and the cost of land and power grid renovation can also be correspondingly reduced. In sparsely populated areas, users can also double the vehicle's range by bringing their own backup battery, avoiding the shortcomings of short legs in electric vehicles. In fact, Tesla's future plans include battery replacement services at its charging stations.

However, there is still a long way to go in replacing car batteries. On the one hand, various car manufacturers are developing their own battery modules, and it is difficult to unify standards among them; Under the current technological conditions, replacing batteries is not as simple as household appliances and requires professional technicians. To solve these problems, it may require the overall planning of the management department and the advancement of technological research and development.

Anyway, the electric vehicle industry is already on the eve of rapid expansion. Effectively solving the problem of supporting facilities, accurately choosing the development path, and removing the obstacles on the path in advance to avoid falling halfway and subjecting the entire industry to individual problems are probably the top priorities of the management department. In recent years, the low-level errors caused by the lack of coordinated development in the transportation industry, such as multiple lanes and multiple lanes, should be taken as a warning.
